has gloss | eng: `Am ha-aretz ( Ężam ha-aretz, plural Ężammei ha-aretz(ot), lit. "people of the land") is a Hebrew term combining the meanings of "rustic" with those of "boorish, uncivilized, ignorant" (compare the meaning of Latinate "pagan"). It is a term of Rabbinic Judaism, applied by scholars of the Talmud to uneducated Jews, who were deemed likely to be negligent in their observance of the commandments due to their ignorance. |
