It lies near the river Orkla, two kilometers from the border of Meldals southern neighbouring municipality of Rennebu. In 1996, it had a population of 321. Jo Aa, who died in the 1990s, lived in Å and had the shortest name in Norway. Å, previously (until 1917) spelled Aa, has the postal address 7335 Jerpstad, to distinguish it from other places named Å. Agriculture is one of the villages most important industries.
