The term was coined in the early 1990s, hinting at the then latest computer model, the 386, and referring to people then in the 30s, having attended university in the 1980s, and born in the 1960s.

has gloss	jpn: 386世代とは韓国の若手政治家ならびに世代の事。1990年代に30代（3）で、1980年代（8）に大学生で学生運動に参加し、1960年代（6）の生まれである。そのため2000年代現在は40代の人間も多い。1980年代後半に発売されていたインテルのi386プロセッサ搭載PCを「386コンピュータ」等と呼んだことにちなんで、1990年代前半ごろに命名された（当時はi486プロセッサが登場しており386はすでに旧式であった）。民主化運動の闘士出身で、国家保安法違反での服役経歴を売り物にする者も多い。
