He is artist in residence at American Ballet Theatre and the former director of the Bolshoi Ballet, having trained under Pyotr Pestov and Anna Markeyeva at the Bolshoi Ballet School. Prior to his appointment as artistic director he was a principal dancer with the Kiev Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Royal Danish Ballet.
