Its first Archbishop and Primate was the Most Revd Sir David Hand, the Bishop of Port Moresby. The current Primate is Archbishop James Ayong, the bishop of the diocese of Aipo-Rongo, with its cathedral city in Mount Hagen, Western Highlands Province.
