Každý baptistický sbor je samostatný a každý člen může zasahovat do sborových záležitostí. Jednotlivé sbory jsou sdruženy do jednot a do kontinentálních seskupení a Světového svazu baptistů. Název baptisté má svůj původ v řeckém slově označujícím “ponoření” neboli křest.
