It was founded in 1943-44 by producer Shashadhar Mukherjee, who came out of Bombay Talkies after director Himansu Rai's death. Mukherjee brought talents like actor Ashok Kumar and director Gyan Mukherjee along with him. Filmistan produced a number of successful hit movies in 1940s and 1950s.
