has gloss	eng: Fortress Crete was the term used during World War II by the German occupation forces to refer to the garrison and fortification of the Greek island of Crete, which they had captured after a fierce battle at the end of May 1941. The Germans occupied the western three prefectures of the island (the prefectures of Chania, Heraklion and Rethymno) with their headquarters in Chania, whilst the Italians occupied the easternmost prefecture of Lasithi until the Italian capitulation in September 1943. The first German garrison unit was the 164th Infantry Division (a.k.a. Fortress Division "Kreta"), succeeded in 1943-1944 by the 22nd Infantry Division. The Italian garrison unit was the 51st infantry division "Siena".

has gloss	ell: Φρούριο Κρήτη (Γερμανικά: Festung Kreta) ήταν ο όρος που χρησιμοποιούνταν κατά τη διάρκεια του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου από τις γερμανικές δυνάμεις κατοχής αναφορικά με τη φρουρά και την οχύρωση της Κρήτης, την οποία κατέλαβαν έπειτα από την μάχη της Κρήτης στα τέλη Μαΐου 1941. Οι Γερμανοί κατέλαβαν τους τρεις δυτικούς νομούς του νησιού (τους νομούς Χανίων, Ηρακλείου και Ρεθύμνου), εγκαθιστώντας το αρχηγείο τους στα Χανιά, ενώ οι Ιταλοί κατέλαβαν τον νομό Λασιθίου, έως τη συνθηκολόγηση της Ιταλίας τον Σεπτέμβριο του 1943. Η πρώτη γερμανική μονάδα που ανέλαβε τη φρουρά του νησιού ήταν η 164η Μεραρχία Πεζικού (164. Infanterie-Division) την οποία διαδέχθηκε την περίοδο 1943-1944 η 22η Μεραρχία Πεζικού (22. Infanterie-Division). Η ιταλική μονάδα στο νησί ήταν η 51η Μεραρχία Πεζικού «Σιένα» (51a Divisione di Fanteria "Siena").
