Alle Geometriedaten können durch Sachdaten (Attribute) ergänzt werden. Offizielle GI-Standards werden zum Beispiel von der Internationale Organisation für Normung (ISO) oder dem Open Geospatial Consortium herausgegeben. Häufig sind jedoch auch De-facto-Industriestandards anzutreffen.
