It creates sound primarily by way of the instrument vibrating itself, without the use of strings or membranes. Headless tambourines come in different shapes with the most common being circular (called jingle ring). It is used in many forms of music, like gospel, pop and rock music.

has gloss	deu: Ein Schellenring, Schellenreif oder auch Schellenkranz ist ein Schlaginstrument aus der Gruppe der Idiophone (Selbstklinger). Als mittelbar geschlagene Metallplättchen zählt er zu den Anschlagrasseln. Er besteht aus einem Reif aus Metall, Kunststoff oder Hartholz, der mit Schellen, heute meist in Form von paarweise angeordneten gewölbten Metallplättchen, besetzt ist. Im Gegensatz zum Tamburin ist der Schellenring nicht mit einem Fell bespannt. Dadurch ist er einfacher zu spielen, preiswerter und robuster. Im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch wird der Schellenring jedoch häufig als "Tamburin" bezeichnet.
