It is used so that player does not take up a roster spot. In football, when a player is placed on the list called "Reserve/Injured", he cannot play for the remainder of the season. In baseball, a similar list called the disabled list is used. However, a major difference between the two is that a player on the disabled list in baseball can still play that season, whereas the NFLs injured reserve list eliminates a player for the rest of the current season. The NHLs IR, as explained below, is the most liberal of the three.
