Hun denkbeelden richten zich, naar eigen zeggen, tégen het kapitalisme, imperialisme, fascisme, oorlog, racisme, seksisme en homofobie. De IS zijn actief in de bewegingen tegen oorlog, sociale afbraak en de neoliberale globalisering. Zij plaatsen zichzelf in de traditie van socialisme van onderaf.
