He was born at Kildavaig farm, in Kilfinan parish, Cowal, Argyllshire, Scotland, and baptised on 4 May 1825. He was the eldest son of Archibald Campbell (born 22 September 1798 at Darnacarochmore, Kilfinan) and Jean McGibbon (born 6 April 1802 at Ardachiple, Glendaruel parish, Cowal). They married on 15 June 1824, at Kilfinan parish. It was later revealed that he was homosexual. |
