It is separated from the Chukchi Sea by a series of long, thin barrier islands which stretch south and north-east from the town of Point Lay and westwards down to Icy Cape. There are seven passes through these islands. The lagoon receives the waters from the Kukpowruk, Kokolik, and Utukok Rivers.

La Laguna è separata dal Mare dei Chukci da una serie di piccole isole che si estendono da Point Lay fino ad Icy Cape. Complessivamente esistono sette passaggi navigabili che portano dalla laguna al mare aperto. I maggiori affluenti della Laguna del Kasegaluk sono il Kukpowruk River, il Kokolik River ed il Utukok River. Come anche il Mare dei Chukci la Laguna del Kasegaluk resta completamente ghiacciata durante lintero inverno artico e non è quindi navigabile in questo periodo. Il nome Inuit per la Laguna del Kasegaluk è "Kasegarlik", anche se la pronuncia precedentemente al 1929 doveva essere differente da quella attuale.
