Its parent county was St. Croix County, encompassing the remaining portions of the Northwest Territory in Wisconsin Territory north of the line drawn from the confluence of the Ripple River with the Mississippi River (today, near Aitkin, Minnesota) to the western edge of Lac Courte Oreilles, to the eastern edge of Lac Courte Oreilles, and to the western branch of the Montreal River.

has gloss	deu: Das La Pointe County war ein County, dass am 19. Februar 1845 aus dem St. Croix County gebildet wurde und zunächst im damaligen Wisconsin-Territorium lag. Als Grenze wurde eine Linie Mündung des Ripple River - Lac Courte Oreilles - West Fork Montreal River verwendet. Als am 29. Mai 1848 Wisconsin zu einem offiziellen Bundesstaat wurde, wurde ein Teil des Countys nicht dem neuen Bundesstaat zugeordnet. Aus den restlichen Teilen wurde das Itasca County gebildet, als am 3. März 1849 das Minnesota-Territorium aus dem Iowa-Territorium gebildet wurde und gleichzeitig die Gebiete des Wisconsin-Territoriums, die nicht in Wisconsin oder im Iowa-Territorium aufgegangen waren, diesem neuen Territorium zugeordnet wurden. Der andere Teil wurde Bestandteil des neuen Bundesstaats Wisconsin. Am 8. Februar 1854 wurde aus einem Teil des Countys das Douglas County, am 27. März 1860 das Ashland County gebildet. Am 12. April 1866 wurde das La Pointe County in Bayfield County umbenannt.
