has gloss	eng: Legislative elections were held in the Latvian SSR on 18 March 1990. It was the first free parliamentary election in Latvia since 1930s. A total of 201 deputies were elected to the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR, 170 of them in the first round. Run-off elections were held on 25 March, 1 April and 29 April 1990. The opposition Popular Front won the majority of the votes. Unlike its Estonian and Lithuanian counterparts, the Latvian Communist Party did not separate from the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Nonetheless, on 3 May 1990, the new Supreme Soviet re-elected the Communist Party member Anatolijs Gorbunovs as its chairman, effectively the leader of Latvia. He subsequently resigned from the party, and a year later the Communist Party was banned by the government.

La segona volta de les eleccions es van celebrar el 25 de març, l1 dabril i el 29 dabril de 1990. Loposició, encapçalada pel Front Popular de Letònia va guanyar la majoria dels vots. A diferència dels seus homòlegs estonià i lituà, el Partit Comunista de Letònia no es presentà com a entitat separada del Partit Comunista de la Unió Soviètica. Tanmateix, el 3 de maig de 1990, el nou Soviet Suprem va nomenar el comunista renovador Anatolijs Gorbunovs com el seu president, líder de facto de Letònia.
