Stjärnorna tillsammans med de astronomiska koordinaterna, deklination och timvinkel (SHA) återfinns i Nautikalalmanackan, the Nautical Almanac vilken används då navigatörens position skall bestämmas. Redan 1802 nämndes navigationsstjärnorna av Nathaniel Bowditch i the American Practical Navigator och har sedan dess varit de stjärnor som använts vid nyttjande av navigationsmetoden.
