Mezi lety 1959 - 1963 byly rozmístěny na základnách ve Velké Británii, jako rakety středního doletu a byly vybaveny termonukleárními hlavicemi. Později byly přestaveny na nosné rakety a posloužily jako základ pro další generaci nosných systémů - Rakety Delta. Développé pour le compte de lArmée de lAir américaine en un temps record par la société Douglas Aircraft à partir de composants déjà mis au point pour dautres missiles, il a une portée de km. Il emporte une charge nucléaire de 2 mégatonnes et est propulsé par un moteur-fusée à ergols liquides. Sa carrière opérationnelle est très brève puisque il est retiré du service en 1963. Quelques exemplaires sont utilisés en tant que missile anti-satellite jusquen 1972. Alors quil vient tout juste d'être mis en service, le missile sert de point de départ pour le développement des familles de lanceurs Thor et surtout celle des Delta. Le lanceur Delta II, toujours opérationnel en 2009, utilise comme premier étage une version allongée et plus puissante du missile. |
