has gloss	eng: Parafollicular cells (also called C cells) are cells in the thyroid that produce and secrete calcitonin. They are located adjacent to the thyroid follicles and reside in the connective tissue. These cells are large and have a pale stain compared with the follicular cells or colloid. In teleost and avian species these cells occupy a structure outside of the thyroid gland named the ultimobranchial body.

has gloss	deu: Die parafollikulären Zellen sind Zellen in der Schilddrüse der Säugetiere. Sie werden als parafollikulär bezeichnet, da sie im Bindegewebe der Schilddrüse zwischen bzw. neben (syn. para) den Schilddrüsenfollikeln einzeln oder in Gruppen lokalisiert sind. Die Hauptfunktion der parafollikulären Zellen ist die Produktion des Hormons Calcitonin und sie werden entsprechend als C-Zellen (C für Calcitonin) bezeichnet. Phylogenetisch leiten sie sich von den Ultimobranchialen Körpern (Glandula ultimobranchialis) ab, die bei anderen Wirbeltieren als eigene Organe existieren.
