Having occurred on the same day as the more infamous Great Chicago Fire, the Peshtigo Fire is mostly forgotten. On the same day as the Peshtigo and Chicago fires, the cities of Holland, and Manistee, Michigan, across Lake Michigan, also burned, and the same fate befell Port Huron at the southern end of Lake Huron.

Peshtigo og en rekke andre mindre byer og landsbyer i Wisconsin og Michigan, og den krevde antagelig flere dødsoffer (1200-2500) enn noen annen brann i USA før terrorangrepet i 2001. Brannen drepte 25-50 % av Peshtigos innbyggere foruten hundrevis av mennesker i omegnen og i andre småbyer. Den rammet Peshtigo sent om kvelden 8. oktober 1871 – samtidig med flere katastrofale skogbranner lenger øst, og samme dag (muligens samme time) som den langt mer berømte brannen i Chicago brøt ut.
