It provides the final voltage transformation in the electric power distribution grid, stepping down the voltage used in the overhead distribution wires to the level used by the customer. Because of weight restrictions transformers for pole mounting are only built for primary voltages under 30kV.

has gloss	deu: Ein Masttransformator ist ein auf einem Hochspannungsmast montierter Transformator. Wegen des hohen Gewichts von Transformatoren werden Masttransformatoren in Deutschland nur für Spannungen bis etwa 30 kV eingesetzt. Als Masttransformatoren können gewöhnliche ölisolierte Transformatoren bis zu einer Nennleistung von 160 kVA eingesetzt werden. Bei entsprechender Masttragfähigkeit sind auch Transformatoren mit einer Nennleistung von 250 und – in Deutschland allerdings nicht üblich – 400 kVA möglich.
