Das Entfernen der Flossen wird normalerweise beim lebenden Hai durchgeführt, der auch beim Zurückwerfen ins Wasser noch lebt. Der Hai ist dann nicht mehr in der Lage zu schwimmen und sinkt zu Boden, wo er durch Ersticken verendet oder – ebenfalls noch lebend – von anderen Fleischfressern gefressen wird.
