It was created by people from other non-industrial parts of England, as an insult for been mainly an industrial economy. The name has not come from either Newcastle-upon-Tyne (known as "Geordies") and Sunderland ("Mackems"). The name originates from protests to the local industry and chemical plants which produced local emissions and in the past smog.
