Tales of the lake-dwelling creature can be traced to stories told by members of the Washoe and Paiute tribes in the mid-1800s. Tahoe Tessie "has been described by eyewitnesses as being over 60 feet long, with an undulating, serpentine body, dark skin, and reptilian features." Purported sightings continue in modern times.
