It is set in a supermarket in the present and concerns a battle of wills between a man (Fred) who wants to go through a nine-item express line with eleven items in his cart and a store-employee (Mabel) who refuses to bend the rules. The first performance of The Express Line took place on November 9 1979, at the Hillbarn Theatre in Foster City, California.
