Established by HM Queen Victoria in 1879, its prime purpose is to defend the earth against extraterrestrial threats. The Torchwood Institute begins, however, to use their findings to restore the British Empire to its former glory. To those ends, the organisation acquires and reverse engineers alien technology by any means deemed necessary. According to one of its base's directors, Yvonne Hartman, its nationalist attitude includes refusing to use metric units. |
