| has gloss | (noun) a surcharge added to the cost per person when traveling alone single supplement |
| has gloss | eng: A single supplement is a charge added to a per-person occupancy rate that is based on an assumption of double occupancy, as on a cruise ship. This is well known throughout the Travel Industry as being the singlemost divisive charge made by companies (especially Cruise Companies.) The reason is that the Single Supplement is normally 200% the standard fare (for example $400) This means that the Single Cruiser is usually requested to pay the total fare for a couple (in the example this would be $800.) Whilst a couple could quite easily suffer the financial burden of a $800 withdrawal of money, as the burden would normally be shared between 2, in the case of a single traveller the entire burden is placed upon one traveller. This therefore makes cruising fairly inaccessible for all but the most well off singles. (Even the fares of Single Cabins which some lines offer are usually excessive and in many cases far more expensive than the comparable twin room. In one example a single inside stateroom was nearly the same price as a Junior Suite. |
