The kanzu is the national costume of Uganda, Tanzania, The Comoros and it is worn in some regions of Kenya. Kanzu is a Swahili word that means robe, tunic, or kaftan. Ugandan kanzu The Ugandan kanzu was introduced into the country by Arab traders. Ssekabaka Ssuna of Buganda, was the first king or Kabaka of Buganda to wear the kanzu. After the Kabaka adopted the attire, it became the formal wear of all Buganda men. The kanzu spread from the Buganda tribe to become the national costume of all men in Uganda. It is a variation of the Arabic thobe. Originally, the garment was made from barkcloth. Today the kanzu is made from silk, cotton, poplin, or linen. Linen tunics are the most expensive. The main difference between the kanzu and the Arabic thobe is the design. Arab tunics are machine sewn, whereas the kanzu is made by hand.
