Alternative scientific names include Channa africanus (Steindachner, 1879) and Parophiocephalus africanus (Steindachner, 1879). Little is published on its biology. Limited primarily to coastal sections of rivers, it is thought to be a nest-building, thrust predator like other Channidae.
