The area code was the second area code to be split off from the original area code 504, which had covered the entire state previously. Area code 318 was the first to be split off from area code 504 in 1957. Area code 225 split from area code 504 during 1998/99. The numbers 2-2-5 correspond on the alpha-numeric keyboard to the letters C-A-J; a nod to the area's Cajun heritage.
