The poems in Ariel mark a dramatic turn from Plaths earlier, Colossus poems with their free flowing images and characteristically menacing psychic landscapes. The distinction often cited by critics between the two books, The Colossus and Ariel is that there's something much swifter, more abrupt, more sardonic about the latter.
