Die größte Stadt von Neuseeland, Auckland, wurde in diesem aus Basalt bestehenden Vulkanfeld erbaut, welches aus 50 nicht mehr aktiven Maaren, Aschenkegeln und Tuffringen besteht. Die ersten Eruptionen begannen etwa vor 60.000 bis 140.000 Jahren. Das elliptische Vulkanfeld hat in seiner nord-südlichen Ausrichtung eine Länge von 29 Kilometern. Geologische Untersuchungen der Gesteine ergaben, dass sich in den letzten 20.000 Jahren im Gebiet des Vulkanfelds 19 Ausbrüche ereigneten. Pole je tvorené viac ako 50 vulkanickými centrami (troskovými kužeľmi a maarmi), má eliptický tvar (najväčšía šírka je 29 km) a jeho vek je datovaný na neskorý pleistocén (144 000 rokov). V horninovom zložení prevládajú alkalické bazalty až bazanity. Posledná erupcia sa odohrala približne pred 600 rokmi, počas nej vznikol ostrov Rangitoto.
