The first section between Gent and Wetteren was finished in 1837, and the line was completed May 1, 1856. A connection between Gent and Oostende exists since 1838 and is named line 50A. Between 1923 and 1933, the line 50A was extended to Brussels, which serves as a fast connection between Brussels and Gent.
