The modification was discovered in the 1980s as an unwanted side effect of reactive ion etching (RIE). Another method for forming a similar structure was developed in Eric Mazurs laboratory at Harvard University (1998).

has gloss	deu: Schwarzes Silicium (engl. black silicon) ist eine Oberflächenmodifikation des kristallinen Siliciums. Dabei entstehen durch hochenergetischen Beschuss durch Ionen oder ultrakurzer Laserpulse nadelförmige Strukturen auf der Oberfläche, die die Reflexion des Substrates stark verringern. Ursprünglich wurde diese Veränderung Mitte der 1980er Jahre beobachtet, damals war es ein negativer Nebeneffekt beim reaktiven Ionentiefenätzen (DRIE).
