Brisbane is the largest population center in Queensland and is known for its residents love of home renovation, six burner barbecues and property speculation. The "BrisVegas" nickname is believed to have been coined by Anne Harris (née Miles) in the mid 1990s at the Thai Wan On Restaurant in West End. This has never been identified with certainty, although it has been connected with a Sydney Morning Herald headline, an Elvis Presley tribute CD It is believed to have been first used in print in a 1996 edition of the Courier Mail, also approximately the time of the opening of the Treasury Casino in Brisbane and the popularisation of poker machines in Brisbane bars and clubs, a play on the popular gaming ground of Las Vegas. The name has also been attributed to the citys nightlife , compact size of the central business district and previous lack of sophistication when compared with more populated Australian cities and also to Las Vegas.
