has gloss	deu: Die CLAW Hypothese geht davon aus, dass Phytoplankton eine wichtige Rolle im Klimasystem der Erde spielt und somit einen Teil des Gaia genannten Selbstkontrollsystems Erde darstellt. Es handelt sich um einen negativen Rückkopplungseffekt (Gegenkopplung), auch feedback loop genannt. Hierbei wirken manche Mechanismen der ursprünglichen Änderung entgegen, um den ursprünglichen Zustand zu erhalten. Konkret wird durch die globale Erwärmung das Wachstum des Phytoplanktons angeregt, wodurch mehr Dimethylsulfid (DMS) produziert wird, was zu einem höheren Aerosol-Gehalt der Atmosphäre führt, der wiederum zur Abkühlung der Erdatmosphäre führt.
