has gloss | eng: Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) are materials currently (2009) being evaluated for use in aircraft engines. Their appeal lies in their strength (near that of metal), their resistance to high temperatures (2,200 °F capability), and their light weight (about a third of nickel; about half of titanium). They are formed using a silicon melt infiltration process in which silicon carbide fibers are encapsulated with ceramic resin; the resulting solid form is then provided with a heat-resistant coating. |
