It is generally dated to the enthusiasm for ancient Egypt generated by Napoleons conquest of Egypt and, in Britain, to Admiral Nelsons defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. Napoleon took a scientific expedition with him to Egypt. Publication of the expeditions work, the Description de lÉgypte, began in 1809 and came out in a series though 1826. However, works of art and, in the field of architecture, funerary monuments in the Egyptian style had appeared in scattered European settings from the time of the Renaissance. |

Il offre des exemples concrets de limage mouvante de lÉgypte dans limagination européenne. En partie à cause de son association avec le culte de la mort dans lancienne Égypte, et en partie parce que, à la différence du renouveau grec, ses valeurs morales et politiques ne viennent pas des Lumières ou dun lieu dorigine pouvant être perçu comme égalitaire telle la culture aristocratique littéraire ou la démocratie, le goût pour léclectisme égyptien n'a jamais été très populaire ; Néanmoins, il a laissé sa marque en Europe et en Amérique du Nord.
