The rapids are caused by a dramatic descent in the elevation of the riverbed. These rapids are considered by locals to be the most dangerous on the entire Delaware River, but the actual difficulty of navigating this stretch of the river is greatly exaggerated The Delaware River is a major industrial shipping waterway and one of the busiest in the world. It is also the only free flowing major river in the eastern United States.
