Es entstand 1897 als neusprachlicher Zweig bei der Teilung des Städtischen Gymnasiums von 1520. Es gehört damit zusammen mit dem altsprachlichen Lessing-Gymnasium zu den beiden ältesten Frankfurter Schulen.
