Słowo pochodzi od greckiego "μαιευτικός" odnoszącego się do sztuki położniczej. Według Sokratesa, każdy człowiek nosi w sobie prawdziwą wiedzę, jednak nie jest tego świadom. Dlatego też potrzebny mu jest nauczyciel ("położnik"), który pomoże mu odnaleźć w sobie tę wiedzę.
