The Minister works together with the Minister for Finance and has special responsibility for the Office of Public Works which oversees the preservation of government and historic buildings. The Minister of State does not hold cabinet rank. The position was created on 1 January 1978, replacing the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance.
