has glosseng: In the Republic of Ireland, the National Day of Commemoration commemorates all Irish men and women who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations. It occurs on the Sunday nearest July 11 (see Irish Calendar), the anniversary of the date in 1921 that a truce was signed ending the Irish War of Independence. There as a major parade each Easter until the early 1970s, when the Troubles in Northern Ireland made the commemoration of the earlier Irish Republican rebels more problematic in symbolism. Smaller official commemorations persisted at Arbour Hill Barracks.
