The party is ideologically aligned with the Liberal Party of Canada but the two parties are organizationally independent and have separate, though overlapping, memberships. The party is currently led by the Premier of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty.

Zwar ist sie ideologisch ähnlich ausgerichtet wie die Liberale Partei Kanadas, doch sind die beiden Parteien organisatorisch unabhängig. Es kommt allerdings häufig vor, dass Politiker sowohl in der Provinz- als auch in der Bundespartei Mitglied sind. Vorsitzender ist Dalton McGuinty, der amtierende Premierminister der Provinz. Seit den Wahlen im Oktober 2007 stellen die Liberalen 71 von 107 Abgeordneten in der Legislativversammlung von Ontario.
