| has gloss | eng: Platform Controller Hub (PCH), formerly code named "Ibex Peak", is a redesigned chipset that is part of Intel's new architecture of computing. The PCH chipset, often described as Intel 5 Series chipset, was designed to address the eventual problem of a bottleneck between the CPU and the motherboard. As processing speeds/cores keep increasing, the bandwidth connection between the CPU and the motherboard would reach full capacity and a bottleneck would occur. The speed would be limited by the FSB. As a solution, the new PCH design transferred several functions, connections, and controllers belonging to the northbridge and southbridge chipset and rearranged them between a new central hub called the PCH and the processor. In summary, the PCH is a merger of the northbridge and southbridge chipset. |
