The Pyramid of the Sun is the second largest pyramid in the new world, after the Great Pyramid of Cholula. The Pyramid of the Moon is at the top (northern) end of the Avenue of the Dead (Miccaohtli in Nahuatl), and the Pyramid of the Sun is to the east of the avenue, about a third of the way south.

Nimellä viitataan siihen, ettei Kuun pyramidin korkeus ole yhtä merkittävä kuin Auringon pyramidi. Auringon pyramidi on Amerikan mantereiden toisiksi korkein pyramidi, vain Cholulassa sijaitseva pyramidi on sitä korkeampi (66 m). Auringon pyramidissa on tasan 365 porrasta.
