The base has been home to 45 Commando, which is part of 3 Commando Brigade, since 1971, although it was first constructed as a Fleet Air Arm base in 1938, when it was known as HMS Condor. The base also houses 7 (Sphinx) Battery Royal Artillery, part of 29th Commando Regiment Royal Artillery.
