It was upgraded in 2002, the first phase of station upgrading works on the system. Somerset MRT Station was named in reference to an English playwright, novelist and short story writer, William Somerset Maugham. During his years in Singapore of the 1930s, Maugham wrote a series of stories on Malaya, Borneo and Singapore while staying at Raffles Hotel.
