Since the people in Stockholm generally are early adopters it is hard to define what constitutes Stockholmska because various influences are quickly picked up in Stockholmska and then spread to the rest of Sweden. One example is the thin L sound (as opposed to the thick L) that came into Stockholmska from German merchants. The thin L then spread into standard Swedish and the thick L is now considered a dialect feature.

Det är svårt att definiera stockholmska eftersom en av dess egenskaper är att den lätt tar upp olika influenser och ofta ändrar sig helt mellan generationerna. Sedan sprider sig uttal och ordvändningar från stockholmskan vidare ut i landet för att till slut ses som rikssvenska. Ett exempel är det tunna l-ljudet som först kom till stockholmskan från tyskar bosatta där och sedan spred sig över nästan hela Sverige.
