First broadcast in May 1956 over WRCA television (now WNBC) in New York City, it currently originates from the studios of the CUNY Graduate Center and airs on public broadcasting stations nationwide. Its creator, Richard Heffner, has been the host from its inception, except for several years in the 1960's when it was hosted by the late Princeton University historian Eric F. Goldman.
